Double Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso suffered a big crash on the 10th stage of the Dakar Rally as he rolled his Toyota twice.

The Spaniard lost control of his Toyota Hilux while driving over a sand dune and subsequently flipped into a double barrel roll before landing back on its wheels.

Both Alonso and his co-driver Marc Coma were unhurt in the incident, and Alonso even proceeded to immediately drive away from the scene despite losing his windscreen.

Fernando Alonso will continue his preparations for his debut in the Dakar Rally next January by entering a local rally in Saudi Arabia this week.

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Alonso confirmed last month he would be entering the Dakar Rally with Toyota Gazoo Racing in 2020, having set his sights on the rally raid event following the conclusion of his LMP1 programme in June last year.

Fernando Alonso scored his maiden rally raid podium in Saudi Arabia on Sunday as he continued his preparations for January’s Dakar Rally.

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Alonso entered the five-day Al Ula-Neom Cross-Country Rally with Toyota in Saudi Arabia, giving him and co-driver Marc Coma a first run-out in conditions similar to what they can expect at the Dakar.

Alonso and Coma took third on the final two days of the rally to rise up to P3 in the final overall standings, benefitting from an overnight penalty for Sheikh Khalid Al-Qassimi of Abu Dhabi Racing.

Alonso, who has twice won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and claimed a maiden sportscar title in the LMP1 World Endurance Championship since walking away from F1 at the end of 2018, is preparing for his first Dakar appearance at next month’s event in Saudi Arabia.

Double Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has hit trouble early on during his Dakar Rally debut after picking up damage to his car.

The Spaniard and Toyota co-driver Marc Coma came to a stop around 100 miles into the second stage of the Saudi Arabia-based rally, which takes place between Al Wajh to Neom.

Alonso’s Toyota Hilux suffered significant damage to one of its wheels and suspension after hitting a yet-to-be-determined object. The pair subsequently got out of their car to carry out repair work, which has set them back over two and a half hours.

Paulo Goncalves has passed away while competing at the Dakar Rally.

The 40-year-old, competing for Hero MotoSports Team Rally in the motorcycle class, suffered a fall during Stage 7 heading from Riyadh to Wadi Al Dawasir and went into cardiac arrest.

A medical helicopter was immediately dispatched to Goncalves which flew him to Layla Hospital where the Portuguese rider was pronounced dead.

Tributes have been pouring in following the passing of Paulo Goncalves at the Dakar Rally, with Honda Racing Corporation President Yoshishige Nomura describing him as “a driving force for the team�?with “tremendous achievements and immeasurable contribution as a Honda rider�?

Goncalves suffered a fall during Stage 7 of this year’s Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia and went into cardiac arrest. A medical helicopter was immediately dispatched which flew the Portuguese rider to Layla Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Carlos Sainz clinched his third overall victory in the Dakar Rally on Friday after retaining his lead through the final stage in Saudi Arabia, as Fernando Alonso ended his debut event in 13th place.

Sainz Sr. had led the majority of the two-week stint in Saudi Arabia, and held a 10-minute advantage over Nasser Al-Attiyah heading into the final stage from Haradh to Qiddiya.

Al-Attiyah was able to win the stage for Toyota Gazoo Racing, but Sainz managed to lose just three minutes to wrap up his third Dakar win by 6m21s.

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso says he will “probably�?return to the Dakar Rally in the future after finishing 13th at his first attempt of the legendary rally raid race.

Alonso turned his attention to Dakar after winning the FIA World Endurance Championship with Toyota last June, continuing his bid to sample and compete across numerous forms of motorsport.

The Spaniard teamed up with co-driver Marc Coma as part of Toyota’s four-car Dakar entry, and impressed through his first attempt at the race, placing as high as second on one of the stages.

Edwin Straver has died as a result of his injuries sustained in a crash at the Dakar Rally.

The 48-year-old Dutch motorcycle rider crashed 124km into Stage 11 at this year’s Dakar Rally and was found by a medical helicopter crew who gave him immediate treatment before he was airlifted to hospital in Riyadh.

Straver was repatriated to the Netherlands on Wednesday before his death was confirmed by his family. The Dutch rider was competing in his third Dakar Rally having finished 30^th overall and first in the Original by Motul class in 2019.
