Wickens 'awake and alert', airlifted to hospital after IndyCar crash

Robert Wickens is confirmed to be "awake and alert" following a multi-car accident on the opening lap of the ABC Supply 500 Indy𒁏Car race at P💟ocono Raceway on Sunday, with the Canadian driver being airlifted to hospital for further evaluations.

Driving for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, Wickens was caught up in an ac💖cident with Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe that💛 left the catch fencing damaged and debris being strewn across the track, resulting in the race being red flagged immediately.

Wickens was tended to by IndyCar's medical team in the medical centre befo𒅌re being transferred to the medical helicopterꦏ and taken to a local hospital, with an INDYCAR spokesman confirming he was "awake and alert".

"Robert Wickens was awake and alert when he came here, and is being transported to Lehigh🌼 Valley Cedar Crest Hospital in Allentown for evaluations," the spokesman said.

"We'll have more updates later. That's where 🃏wꦛe stand."

Race control at Pocono confirmed the race would not ✅resume for at least one hour while repairs to the circuit were completed, while Hunter-Reay was checked and cleared at th🀅e medical centre following the accident.
